Lincoln Sedan Delivery Deco Liner & Harley Davidson Sportster Deco Scoot
Both the Art Deco movement and the bodywork designs of Figoni & Falaschi and Saoutchik of the 1930s inspired Terry Cook and Frank Nicholas of Deco Rides in New Jersey, USA, to construct this remarkable car with a design based on the 1939 Lincoln Zephyr.
The bodywork is made of fibreglass and the power is provided by an eight-cylinder, 5.7-litre Chevrolet ‘small block’ engine. The Chevrolet Blazer four-wheel drive chassis has been extended to allow for the motorcycle, a 1992 Harley-Davidson Sportster with a hand-beaten, aluminium body. The ramp on which the motorcycle stands can be moved in and out of the car electrically. The project was completed in 2008.
‘Customising’, the technical and visual redevelopment of objects to one’s own taste and specification, is a trend that became very popular in the United States after World War II, particularly in the case of motorcars. Old cars were bought by young people for next to nothing and fitted with tuned-up engines. These cars, which were often painted in bright, flashy colours and kitted out with many chrome parts, are known as ‘hot rods’, ‘street rods’ or ‘custom cars’.
